Wow you scanned our airplane!

That's super cool! You are looking at a Cozy MKIV built by Russ and Kristy Meyerriecks. We would love if you tagged us on social media @russroams.

What is a Cozy MKIV?

This airplane is a plans-built experimental aircraft. Every part was crafted by hand out of foam and fiberglass. It is a widened 4 place version of Burt Rutan's long-ez design. It took us about 5 years to build from start to finish.

Why does it park on the nose?

1) It looks cool 😎

2) In the air, the nose retracts to improve airflow into the engine and gain speed.

3) On the ground, the nose retracts to "park" the airplane and keep it from moving. Like a parking brake

How fast does it fly?

The fastest I have recorded is 186 KTAS (214mph) at 8500ft burning 12gph solo pilot at aft C.G. and half tanks. On cross country we typically fly lean of peak at 170 KTAS (195mph) at 9500-10500ft burning 8gph with fully loaded fuel and baggage.

Is it quiet?

No, most folks at my airport have commented on how incredibly loud this airplane is. I believe it's due to the prop "chopping" the exhaust notes. It does sound great doing low passes, however 😉

Is this a per-plans cozy or what mods did you do?

This cozy is per plans. Cabin, canopy, and seatback are all in the plans positions. With the exception of common mods like electric nose gear and landing brake: The only things I modified were:

1) Added side windows for visibility and control stick clearance

2) Rudder pedals moved 1" foreword

3) Knee holes in the instrument panel are 2" larger to accommodate taller pilot with long legs

4) Headed pitot under the strake

How far does it fly?

About 1200nm when flying higher altitudes lean of peak. Usually we only flight plan for 3 hour legs because I need to get out and stretch which is about 500-600nm. Here are range rings from our home airport for 1, 2, and 3hr flights non-stop

What engine does it have?

It has a 180hp parallel valve Superior IO-360 with mechanical fuel injection, a slick magneto, and a surefly magneto. A fairly standard engine for experimental aircraft.
